It's Great to be a Florida Gator

Life as a telecommunications student at the University ofFlorida is pretty exciting I must say. There are so many opportunities available for students in our college that make it so much easier for people to get engaged and involved. The Center for Media Innovation and Research has allowed so many students to improve their journalism abilities and get a taste for the real world of journalism that is out there. The Innovation News Center is somewhere that you can find me most of the time if I am on the University of Florida campus. This is a place where I have learned skills to become a well-trained reporter and journalist. I have learned how to orchestrate interviews, how to record and edit sound, as well as video on premier pro. The INC definitely has a place in my heart and is somewhere that I have spent a lot of my time in my years at the university. There are so many things that I have learned and had the opportunity to experience as a Telecommunications major that I will be able to have with me for the rest of my life.

My Gator Peers

I've gotten the chance to take a look at some of my classmates work and it was really awesome to see how talented they are. I thought it was so cool how my classmate Kara Hudgins and I are doing our blog on places to eat in Gainesville. It was cool to see Kara's perspective on some of the same restaurants we enjoy. Kara pointed out the restaurant called Zoe's Kitchen and I definitely want to give it a try now that I have read about it. Another blog that caught my attention was the Life of a Type A done by Courtney McKenna. Through reading her blog I figured out that we are both studying Telecommunications and she offered some brilliant advice about makeup and outfit choices, that I will definitely take into consideration. One blog that I thought was awesome was done by Jonathan Perez. He has done reviews on some of his favorite superhero movies and it is so cool to see how he can analyze the characters and how the plot develops. Jonathan was right when he said that superhero movies really take you back to your childhood. I am so amazed by all of my classmates work and have learned a lot from looking through their work.

The day in the life of Paige

Hello everyone, my name is Paige Madison Pitisci. I am a senior at the University of Florida studying Telecommunications. If you'd like to learn more about things I do or have done here at the University, take a look at my resume! I love hanging out with friends, going to the beach and traveling. I studied abroad in Florence, Italy two summers ago and it was one of the best times of my life. On the weekends during my study abroad experience, I also ventured to places such as, Paris, Barcelona and Greece. The entire trip was incredible. Studying abroad really opened my eyes to all of the different cultures, languages and types of food in our world we live in. Even here in Gainesville we have so many different kinds of food we can experience, including Italian. Because of how much I love Japanese food, one day I really want to make it over to the eastern side of the world. But for now, I will resort to one of my favorite restaurants that takes me there through imagination, Dragonfly. Now everyone, get out there and experience the culture around us!

1, 2, 3, 4 Rivers!

4 Rivers Smokehouse might seem a little similar to one of my earlier posts about Adam's Rib Company, but they have their differences. Both places have amazing barbecue and even though 4 Rivers is not as much of a local joint as Adam's, it is still worth the visit. The 4 Rivers Smokehouse in Gainesville is the fifth smokehouse but the first in a college town. You'll have to make hard choices about the menu items; you can either go with the pulled pork, the Texas sausage, or the Signature Angus Brisket. No choice is a bad one!

Taste bud heaven!

Some nights you are just really feel in' sushi. If you are in the mood for top of the line sushi and a cool environment to sit down and have a meal in, then you have to try Dragonfly Sushi. There is a variety of rolls to choose from and you can never go wrong. Sushi rolls such as the Black Dragon and the Mango Tango are some fan favorites. For an appetizer you can choose between the delicious crab wontons or the tiger shrimp, both are hard to beat. There are also many different Japanese beers to choose from and a Sake Sampler. This place definitely puts up a fight against one of the previous restaurants that I blogged about called Chopsticks. The Dragonfly is a Gainesville token and everyone should give it a try!

If you are looking for a trendy dining experience The Jones  is the place to be. The Jones serves breakfast, lunch and dinner as well as an assortment of beverage options. A delicious starter to choose from is the Brie Plate14. Brie is an excellent type of cheese and is complemented well with selected fruit. A dinner favorite is the Jones Eggplant Parm. Last but not least, The Jones is particular popular for their delectable Bloody Mary's that one can not resist. It is well worth it to check out The Jones and there is no doubt that you won't be completely satisfied!

GoOoOo Gators!

Feelin' festive! The best place to be for Saturday college football is The Swamp Restaurant! The Swamp has outdoor seating on a patio and on a second floor deck. There is tons of room for all of your friends and family! For a few hours many people rent swamp out for a private party. The Swamp has spectacular wings, wraps, sandwiches and more. Some of my personal favorites at Swamp include, the Ahi Tuna appetizer, Buffalo chicken wrap and the Hawaiian Pork Quesadilla. The Swamp Restaurant is located in Midtown on University and definitely worth the experience!

Ciao Bella

Italian food really hits home for me. My family is italian and I love when we all get together and share great memories and eat good home cooked italian food. When I'm in Gainesville though that home-cooked italian food is not accessible. However, Leonardo's on University Ave satisfies my taste buds. With a delicious pizza selection and many different kinds of pasta and salads, Leonardo's is the place to go for a homesick Italian college student.

BJ's Restaurant and Brewhouse

If you're in the mood for some food and beer while you are watching the LSU game this weekend, hit up BJ's Restaurant and Brewhouse on West Newberry Road!!

Great read: "Don't Make Me Think, Revisited"- Steve Krug

All of the tips and guidelines that Steve Krug presents us in his book, “Don’t Make Me Think, Revisited” are very helpful and will lead to website success if correctly followed. This books definitely opened my eyes to what actually makes a great website. Something that Krug said that really stuck with me was, “Don’t make me think!” Do not let a viewer of your website be confused. Nothing should be confusing about a website, the viewer should be able to easily access and understand what the website is trying to accomplish.
Krug also makes a great point about how we believe people use web sites and how they actually use them. When I am browsing a web page, I am not looking at every single detail and page. I am looking at what I opened the web site for in the first place and once I find it, I leave the page.
Another concept that really struck me by surprise is a quote from Krug’s Third Law of Usability, “Get rid of half the words on each page, then get rid of half of what’s left.” This is pretty interesting and definitely was news to me. I always feel like people try and write tons of words and it has always seemed so repetitive to me. As a reader, a website is definitely more appealing to my eyes when there is very limited writing. There is no need for unnecessary words and sentences. This is a concept that publishers of websites should take into consideration more often. Following the concept of not including unnecessary words, Krug discusses in chapter four that it should never take more than three, four or five clicks to get to any page in the site. He includes that, “the rule of thumb might be something like three mindless, unambiguous clicks equal one click that requires thought.” A website should be easy to access and if guidance is needed, Krug says its best to keep it brief, timely and unavoidable.
When it comes to usability testing, Krug recommends to keep it simple and often. There is too much pressure to wait until the site is close to being launched to do extensive usability testing. It just makes everything difficult and can be avoided. Something that I struggle with is procrastination, which is something that cannot happen when it comes to a web site. After reading Krug’s book I have realized that it is always best to stay one step ahead of the game to avoid problems and stress with your website.
Krug discusses what an employee can do to better a web site’s usability and how to approach the situation with your boss and their boss too. When your businesses website has a low usability level it is your responsibility as the owner or employee to make it better and to keep it simple. In my opinion, I would definitely want to make changes to make my businesses website the best it could be and if that takes a few uncomfortable conversations and questioning someone’s judgment of the site, then so be it.

All in all, Krug provided me with some very important concepts and guidelines that I will keep with me from here on out when creating websites. Technology is continuous developing and online web sites are surely booming.

YEEHAW!

Lookin' for a great Barbecue place to take your family to this weekend? Look no further. Adam's Rib Company has been serving fantastic barbecue for over 8 years. Adam's has a North and South location on 13th street and are the hometown barbecue headquarters. Adam's Rib Company has an assortment of melt in your mouth options such as pork, chicken, ribs, brisket, gator bites and more. One of my favorite things about Adam's Rib Co. is getting my giant ice tea with my meal that really hits the spot. There are a number of side options, on top of the macaroni and collar greens that you see below, you can also fancy yourself with some green beans or black eyed peas. And if you are ever hosting a party and need to feed your guests, Adam's Rib Co. is now catering!

Sweet teeth welcome!!

One of my favorite places to dine in Gainesville would have to be The Gelato Company in downtown. This place has such a great menu and a really neat environment. It's pretty small but the quality of the food makes up for the limited space. I had lunch there recently when my parents were in town to visit. My mom and I both got the delicious Vegetariano Panini and it was incredible. All of the sandwiches come with two sides. You can choose from chicken salad, tuna salad, fruit or side salad. You definitely get a bang for buck at the Gelato Company. And let's not stop there! With the purchase of a drink you also get a free small Gelato. So after a mouth watering meal you can satisfy your sweet tooth with many choices including mint chocolate chip, mango or moose tracks!

Kung Fu Pow

Spice up your life with some of the best Chinese in town! Chopsticks is located on SW 13th and you can't miss it. With a view of Bivens Arm Lake customers can enjoy their meals with a peace of mind. Sitting outside on the back deck is one of the best ways to enjoy the perfect dinner date. One of Chopstick's most popular dishes is a noodle soup called Pho. You can order Pho with chicken, beef or meatballs. I recommend any of those options they are all spectacular. Chopstick's allows you to customize the spiciness of your order so that you can decide what you are in the mood for. Some other menu items I recommend are the Fried wontons or the summer rolls for an appetizer. For your main course you have to try the Pad Thai or the Eggplant Teriyaki with steamed vegetables. And to top the taste bud extravaganza off, finish it with some delightful Tempura Fried Ice Cream and you will leave Chopsticks extremely satisfied.

Coffee Cures

Sometimes everyone needs a little pick me up. You may be having an off day or need to cram for an exam you have coming up. Don't worry, I know of the perfect place in Gainesville for you to fulfill your needs. Pascal's Coffeehouse and Gallery has a spectacular atmosphere. Students really enjoy having a cup of joe and getting their work done in this great space. The employees are extremely friendly and brighten my day every time I'm in there. So let go of your stresses and head to Pascal's for an artsy latte and a peace of mind.
